The genesis block is mined
The first block (the genesis block) was mined, and the Bitcoin network went live.
Block #0, mined by Satoshi himself, embedded the UK's The Times front-page headline: 'The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.' This is interpreted both as a timestamp proof and as a political statement against the existing financial system. The 50 BTC reward remains permanently locked in an unspendable address.
