First major rally — breaks $1,000
Bitcoin's price surpassed $1,000 for the first time ever.
Surging volume on the Chinese exchange BTCChina drove the price. It was also the period when the 'alternative currency' narrative gained real traction following the Cyprus banking crisis. However, in December of that year, the People's Bank of China banned financial institutions from handling bitcoin, triggering nearly a year-long correction.
