Mt. Gox exchange collapses
Mt. Gox, the Japanese exchange handling 70% of global trading, went bankrupt after losing 850,000 BTC to a hack.
Mt. Gox began as a site for trading Magic: The Gathering cards before being converted into a bitcoin exchange. Years of internal security flaws and poor systems resulted in the loss of about 850,000 BTC (roughly $450 million at the time). This event decisively changed awareness of exchange security and the need for regulation.
