New York's BitLicense takes effect
The New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) introduced 'BitLicense,' the first virtual currency business license in the U.S.
Exchanges, wallet providers, and money changers doing business in New York State were required to meet capital, internal control, and consumer protection requirements to obtain a license. The strict requirements led some businesses to leave the New York market, but it later became the benchmark for virtual asset regulatory models across other U.S. states.
