El Salvador adopts Bitcoin as legal tender
El Salvador became the first country in the world to designate Bitcoin as legal tender.
Led by President Bukele, the 'Bitcoin Law' took effect, requiring all merchants to accept bitcoin payments. The government wallet Chivo was launched, and a mining project using geothermal volcanic energy began. It clashed with the IMF but subsequently inspired follow-on cases such as Bhutan and the Central African Republic.
