FTX collapses
The world's second-largest exchange, FTX, went bankrupt after misuse of funds involving Alameda Research came to light.
After CoinDesk's reporting exposed the fragility of Alameda Research's balance sheet, a bank run ensued, and FTX filed for bankruptcy within days. Founder Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years on fraud and money laundering charges. This became the catalyst for proof-of-reserves requirements to become an industry standard.
