SEC sues Binance and Coinbase simultaneously
The SEC sued both major exchanges for unregistered securities trading, marking a peak in the U.S. regulatory conflict.
Chair Gensler's SEC filed suit against Binance (6/5) and Coinbase (6/6) within two days of each other, designating numerous tokens including Solana and Cardano as 'unregistered securities.' The 'enforcement by regulation' stance drew strong industry backlash and became a rallying point for pro-crypto forces ahead of the 2024 election. Most of these lawsuits were voluntarily dropped by the Trump administration's SEC in 2025.
